Pacific Coast Bicycle Tour 2008
Back in 2006, I referred to my cross-country cycling tour as a once in a lifetime experience. When I finished, although I had a good time, I felt like I could cross long distance tour off my list and move on to other, more motorized vacations. To be honest, I didn’t even want to ride my bike for at least two months after I returned. Well surprise, surprise, my attitude has again shifted back to the notion that a fully loaded, self supported tour would be fun. ( <– remind me I said that when I get discouraged… probably somewhere around Cape Perpetua)
I couldn’t go coast to coast like last time, I’m not that crazy. So I decided that this time around, I should travel to and along one coastline. Since it is the closest, I chose the Pacific. I did learn a few things on my last trip and as a result, this one will be a little bit different. For one, I will be following someone else’s route, not my own. To be fair, how could I get lost this time, I figure head west and then make a left at the ocean, right? ( <– remind me I said that when I get lost… probably somewhere around Los Angeles)
The other major change from last time is that I’ll be riding less miles each day. During the last trip, Chris and I averaged 80 to 100 miles each day. I learned my lesson and won’t be so aggressive, instead I’ll average around 50 miles each day. Much easier, and it will leave me time in the afternoons to slow down and enjoy the scenery a little bit longer.
Lastly, I will be touring solo this time. Chris won’t be riding with me, so you’ll only have my insights into each day’s ride. And I will be making an effort to post updates here regularly, including photos and short videos. I encourage you all to check back regularly to chart my progress, I’ll try to keep it lively. That may become more difficult as each day passes. It could seriously become repetitive real fast, how many superlatives can I come up with to describe the Pacific, the coastline, and the sunsets before I get bored with the scenery? ( <– remind me I said that when I pull out the thesaurus… probably somewhere around Big Sur)
Anyway, I will be riding from my apartment in Seattle to Border Field State Park in San Diego. I expect to arrive sometime on September 10th or roughly 32 days.
Below is my planned itinerary, follow the links to see my posts about each days ride.

You will have a blast. If you can camp/visit at Cape Blanco, it is beautiful. It is the most western point in Oregon.
Be safe and have fun!
