Hi, My name is Maury and my touring partner is Chris, my nephew. This summer(2006) we will be bicycling across the USA. I figured it would be important to record our journey for posterity and for all the people who want to keep up with our daily experiences. It isn’t much to look at yet, but I plan to have regular updates with pictures and short videos. I’m sure Chris will have his own take on each day’s events as well.
It was Chris’s idea. “Hey let’s bike across the country” or words to that effect. I had read about other cross-country bicycle tours and thought ‘that would be cool, if only I could afford it or take the time off or get all the equipment or get in shape’, you know, all those things we think when a neat idea presents itself to us and we talk ourselves out of it.
He can correct me if I’m wrong but, I don’t think Chris thought any of those things when he suggested it to me. Maybe great ideas need to be announced out loud without any forethought. Then all it takes is someone outside your own head to say let’s do this and suddenly your doing it.
At this point in the story ‘doing it’ meant planning it. I took on this task myself since I enjoy planning road trips and this is, after all, just a very intense road trip. Within a week I had our route planned out and possible itineraries and daily distances written down. I shared these with Chris and, we both agreed, we can do this.
Of course, there are lots of resources out there if you want to plan a trip like this, but rather than take a more established route, I thought it would be more challenging for me and my planning skills to find our own way across.
I tried to stay off the main highways where possible and yet include some points of interest and scenic beauty (most points of interest and scenic beauty are off the main road anyway).
I’m sure it will be hard work and I’m sure we’ll have a good time. Hopefully, by following our Journey through this website you’ll have a good time also. If you don’t well… it was Chris’s idea.
